Cambridge #HotDeskDay

Add date

Needs a date

Needs a location Coming soon!

Very rough draft, will be updating over the next few days!

We need local companies to please sponsor 1 or more desks once a year for new developers (and existing developers who work from home) 2 get out. Also for developers visiting or moving 2 Cambridge to meet other developers.

The concept is simply that local companies will sponsor a desk where developers can work. This will be a different location and company each month (or each week if we have enough sponsors).

Working from home can be very lonely and stressful at times. Remaining motivated and productive is a big challenge!

By working in a buzzing / vibey environment the devs will be more productive and help remain sane. It will also be a great chance to meet other developers and companies and for companies 2 meet other devs. Developers can work on their own, or choose to pair program, if they decide that gets them more value. Please follow #hotdeskday on twitter for news on how this will progress. DM me ( Alan on twitter, @snowcode ) if you or your company can sponsor a desk. Each sponsored desk will appear in the camdug calendar with the title Cambridge #HotDeskDay at {COMPANY NAME}. Your company needs to be local to Cambridge, alternatively if you are outside of Cambridge, you must be willing to also sponsor the cost of transport and arrange pick up and return transport from Cambridge station on the sponsored day.

Please follow #hotdeskday to keep up to date with how this progresses.

RSVP to this meetup now so that companies can see who's looking for hotdesking space? Please also indicate if you have space available at ur place, kinda like travelling supper, where we simply visit each other's regular hangout spots.

(Update: 11:30, Some hotdeskdays will not necessarily be at sponsored companies places, and can simply be at each other's places and hangouts. Will try to mix it all up!)

(Update : 15.02.2012, below is the beginning of a list of similar "co-working" spaces that are already available to go and work at. Please send me info on any others you find and I'll add them to the list. If you do attend-visit any of these, please give us feedback)

Hi Ian..yes, thanks for the reminder, excellent link! Will definately add that to the mix of places to go to. The more different places we can have, the better we can mix it all up.

This is an interesting idea. I'd really like to say we'd be able to help out, but our IT infrastructure isn't able to cope with visitors yet.

Hi Alastair, completely understand. Internet access is not practical for a once off venue sponsorship. Most work from home devs have 3g internet access, so as long as there's a good 3g signal from inside the building we're ok. At least for now, the idea is everyone brings their own internet access with them.

    3g wouldn't work for me.

Nick: I'd also be tempted to also setup a #NoInternetHotdeskDay for those extra days when you really just have to get a lot of stuff done! ;-D

Hi Damian... I'm going to wait until we have around 20 developers interested (RSVP'd), who would benefit from hotdesking before I start contacting companies I know asking for sponsorships, and will put the sponsored days onto the calendar. In the meantime perhaps just give a shout-out using the twitter hashtag #hotdeskday and see who joins you and give us some feedback on the venues.

Hi, I happened to be in town today and called in at the Hidden Rooms to see checkout the Coworking Cambridge (CowCam) meet. Unfortunately it looks like it doesn't run any more - according to the Hidden Rooms member of staff I spoke to. Have sent a message to the group organiser to find out what's happening.

Great idea! As a new developer in Cambridge, I think it sounds like an excellent opportunity to meet, be motivated (and hopefully motivate others) and have fun!

Sounds like a great idea. I'll come if I can.
