Building C# Apps for Linux (using Visual Studio!) (Coding Dojo)

The Box Cafe (map)

Selected By: Alan Hemmings

**EDIT:** change of venue - The Box Cafe has wifi available and is only a minute's walk from The Tram Depot.

The aim of the day is to learn how to write applications that can be deployed to linux using Visual Studio.

We will aim to make use of Mono-Tools, a development SDK that will allow us to build and deploy apps using Visual Studio and either run them in Mono or deploy them on linux machines.

[Bring your laptop if you have one]

Agenda:

  • 11am Arrive/coffee
  • 11:15am -> 11:30am: Discussion/decision on app to be built
  • 11:15am -> 1pm: Various open coding/dojo topics around .NET on Linux with at least one session on "using Mono-Tools with Visual Studio" to build/deploy C# app to linux box.
  • 1pm -> 2pm: Lunch (the venue serves food)
  • 2pm -> 3:30pm: Afternoon sessions

    The day was very productive: we managed to get a simple hello world app running under Mono very quickly indeed, which then allowed us to progress to more complicated tasks and encounter some of the limitations of the Mono platform. It seems from some further research that Windows and Linux are very well supported, whilst Mac support in Mono is not so good. After the coding was finished, we went for a drink at the Tram Depot and discussed a number of topics related to software development. All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable day!

    My first time in a meetup like this :) Loved it! We actually finished something and it's possible to learn a lot about a technology with simple things :) I really have to stop using PHP and remember that C# foreaches don't use ($blarg as $wtf) syntax lol Learned a lot and met great people and coders, something to repeat soon! :)
