Are you keen on writing an app for IPhone, but don't wan't to have to learn to code using a screwed up language without any decent tool support? ;-p If so, then you're in luck! Today's Hack day is all about writing apps for IPhone using C#, VB.NET (i.e. .NET) ( using MonoTouch) and C, C++ (Using DragonFireSDK)
Hi Guys... hack day has moved till September 4th so that Lewpen can join us and be our guest iphone Dojo facilitor...hmm, Sensei Lewpen, has a nice ring to it, he he.
Originally the topic was "building an app 4 Jailbroken iphone", but further research (i.e. 10 minutes on google) indicates this is quite an ambitious expectation, so the coding Dojo is going to be a mix of iphone approaches, some requiring Apple Mac's and others requiring only Windows.
Currently in an email discussion with the guys from DragonFireSDK, hopefully they will be kind enough to sponsor us with one of their awesome "ultimate SDK" licences to give away as Swag for the day, and for us to use (holding thumbs)
Woohoo! We'll be exploring using Monotouch to deploy apps to Iphone ... Update : 31-8-2010, Novell has sponsored us with a MonoTouch Licence for the group to use during various hack days as well as some other benefits. I'll be updating the website shortly with the details ;-p
So... it doesnt appear to be a whole host of choices for the aspiring Apple App writer who doesnt want to use Objective-C, and apart from going the raw route and installing Java on a Jailbroken iPhone, which I'm kinda keen on, it seems we're limited to reviewing MonoTouch and DragonFire, and comparing the development experience to the raw Objective-C approach. ( Lewpen will be facilitating and can help us "objectively" he he... compare the different approaches. ;-p )
Update : 31-8-2010, DraginFireSDK have sponsored us with a DragonFire Starter Kitt Licence that I'll be giving away as our swag prize on the day!
Below is the original Hack day description, which I'll leave here for now ...
Coding Dojo (Building an App 4 Jailbroken iPhone using Monotouch and C#)
NB! If you're considering writing code for your own iphone, then please don't install any Apple Updates before the session...just in case. Update: if you're using Dragonfire and Monotouch I don't think this is an issue anymore.
The challenge for the day as a coding Dojo is to build an App for an IPhone (doesnt have to be Jailbroken) using Monotouch, C#, and DragonFire C, C++.

I was amazed at how easy it was to write apps for Iphone on both Windows and Mac platform. We managed to go from zero, to basic app doing essentially what we planned for it to do, in a morning. I'll really pleased.
;-p
